The St. Norbert Farmer’s Market is a weekly farmers market in the south end of Winnipeg that runs from June until the end of October. Since the market opened up in 1988 with only eight vendors it has grown tremendously. There are now around 130 permanent vendors at the market and another 50 variable vendors selling everything from fresh vegetables to meat products to jams, preserves and housewares (St. Norbert Farmer’s Market, 2013).
The experience of the farmer’s market, however, goes beyond just the food it sells; the market builds relationships between people, farmers and the community as a whole. Community members note that the market started really gaining in popularity in 1997, after the flood. The market provided a place for neighbourly interaction and support in a time of need helping to make a more resilient community (Wazny, 2013).
The St. Norbert Farmer’s Market has now grown so much that it needs to address its growth through a new design. The new market design will help to improve vehicular and pedestrian circulation while also providing more covered areas for vendors and shoppers (St. Norbert Farmer’s Market, 2013). The farmer’s market in St. Norbert should be used as a model of success for other smaller farmer’s markets throughout the city.
