Economically, local food systems provide benefits for both the community and the producer. CSA programs allow farmers and consumers to share the risks (and benefits) of farming by allowing consumers to purchase a share of the vegetables as opposed to purchasing them in one-off transactions. Direct-marketing in agriculture also helps to boost the local economy by keeping money in the local system resulting in a healthy and resilient economic system. The graph to the right displays the economic difference of money spent at locally owned business as compared to money spent at non-locally owned businesses. Clearly supporting local businesses will have a greater impact on your city, town or province.
