Connecting consumers and farmers is a way of building socio-cultural capital as it recreates a sense of place that is often lost due to industrial homogeneity (resulting in a sense of placelessness). It also helps to generate dialogue and relationships between producers and consumers allowing each to better understand the needs of the other. Local food systems benefit social and cultural dynamics within communities by helping to provide affordable and healthy food to otherwise vulnerable neighbourhoods. This helps to combat food insecurity in urban areas. These programs not only help to bring healthy and affordable food to the residents, but also provide a social venue for conversation and community building as well as a place to share skills and learn new things.
